When the hottest day of the summer has arrived, but you’ve already eaten too many of those sugary supermarket ice blocks, there is a solution! These healthy, delicious, guilt-free fruity ice treats are perfect for kids, and you’ll come back for more.
Ingredients
- Fruit (you can use any kind of fruit/s, but some to try are apples, strawberries, mango, peaches, kiwi, blueberries, and watermelon)
- Water
Steps
-
1Gather the materials. You'll need:
- a chopping board
- a sharp knife
- old yoghurt tubs, washed after use (get the amount according to how many ice blocks you want)
- popsicle sticks
-
2Cut up the fruit. Cut them into small bite-size pieces that fit in the yoghurt tub. Apples, peaches, and mangoes can be cut into wedges, (remove skin) kiwi can be cut into wheels (remove skin), strawberries can be cut into halves, watermelons can be cut into cubes, and blueberries can be kept whole.Advertisement
-
3Put the fruit into the yoghurt tubs. Make sure you spread the different types evenly through the different tubs so that there is a bit of everything in each of the tubs. The ice block will be more enjoyable if there are lots of different types of fruit.
-
4Pour water into the tubs. Fill them until the water reaches just below the rim. The water will take the flavour of the fruit, so don't worry about putting too much water in them. Just make sure that the tubs don't overflow!
-
5Stick popsicle sticks into the tubs, right in the middle. Don't push them down too far; the idea is that you hold onto the sticks while eating, so you want to make sure that there is enough stick to hold onto. Push them about 4 centimetres (1.6 in) into the fruit.
-
6Put the treats into the freezer. Make sure that the popsicle sticks face up so that the fruit and water don't fall out. You may want to put them onto the chopping board so that they freeze flat.
-
7Remove them from the freezer after four hours, or when you would like to eat them. To ensure that you don't break the ice blocks when you're pulling them out of the molds, fill a sink or bowl with hot water.
-
8Dip the molds into the hot water so that the tops are just out of the water. Avoid contact between the ice blocks and the hot water. Gently pull and twist at the popsicle stick, until the ice block is free of the mold.
-
9Enjoy the finished results!
