Are you relatively new to TF2 and wondered how to communicate via. microphone in-game with other players? Well the answer is shockingly simple, and can be accomplished with only one button click on your keyboard!

Steps

  1. 1
Make sure that your microphone is working and connected first. You can do this by finding and clicking the Options button near the bottom of the game menu or by pressing the Esc button in-game.
  2. 2
Find various panels at the top like "Multiplayer", "Mouse", "Audio", etc.

  3. 3
Click on the Voice panel. There should be a range of options there that you can tinker with to get the ideal sound for your microphone and a "test microphone" button to test your sound (this is how other players hear you in-game).
    • From here you can also change what button you have to press to use voice chat.
  4. 4
Start talking with other players using your microphone! There should be a speech bubble with a red exclamation point (!) at the bottom right corner of your screen.
    • This indicates that your microphone is being activated and that your audio (voice) is being broadcasted to other players in the server.
  5. 5
Use the microphone to communicate with your team in a more efficient manner and demand that your voice is heard!
  6. 6
Advise teammates as well as make game plans to help and support your team. Don't be shy!

I recommend you either leave the server or stop talking. The only way to win a fight against them is not to play.

Due to the bot crisis of spam/aimbots, Valve has restricted communications on their official matchmaking servers. To be able to talk and use text chat on valve matchmaking servers, you must make a purchase on the mannco store in game.

Warnings

  • When you speak with voice chat it will show a symbol over your head showing that you are talking and it will show what team you are on. This will still happen even if you are a spy that is cloaked and/or disguised, so be careful.

  • You may be muted by other players so that they cannot hear your voice. If you are expecting a response from another player and not getting one, the reason may be that they have muted you.

  • If using an internal computer microphone, be careful not to spit all over your keyboard and if you do, dry/clean it up as soon as possible. It may damage your keyboard and/or other internal computer parts.
