Whatever you put on your skin will be absorbed by your body through the blood vessels in your skin. That said, by learning about the ingredients and then making your own body cream you can ensure that what you put on your skin will be beneficial to you and your health.

Steps

  1. 1
Measure the amount of oils and pour them into the taller / bigger Pyrex container.[1]
  2. 2
Measure the amount of liquid and pour them into the smaller Pyrex container.[2]

  3. 3
Measure the amount of thickeners / emulsifiers and add them to the oils. NOTE: Add the Xantham gum to the water base AFTER you take out the containers from the water bath!!!
  4. 4
Add the borax to the water base.
  5. 5
Fill the saucepan or pot to 1/4 with water and place on the stove.
  6. 6
Add both containers to the water bath.
  7. 7
    Let the water simmer.
  8. 8
Stir occasionally with two separate wooden sticks or spoons - (a) to combine the waxes with the oils and (b) for the borax to dissolve in the water. Once the waxes have dissolved, take both containers out of the water bath.
  9. 9
    Start mixing the liquid base (water) with the hand-mixer,and slowly pour 1/8 tsp Xantham gum into the liquid;
  10. 10
Mix for at least 1 - 2 minutes. You will see that the water turns a little jello-like. Tiny bubbles will form and the consistency is going to be thicker than water. Make sure, no clumps are forming at this point.
  11. 11
Place the hand-mixer into the oil base and start mixing while slowly pouring the liquid base into the oils. You will see how the liquid and the oils combine and form a whitish creamy substance.[3]
  12. 12
Mix for at least 10 minutes on high speed. You may notice that the mixture begins already to form and settle into a nice cream.
  13. 13
Add the essential oils and mix for another 2 minutes.[4]
  14. 14
Fill the cream into your sterilized jars.[5]

No, not all skin types bear borax. Borax is extremely alkaline, which makes it irritating when used undiluted.

Things You'll Need

  • Pyrex glass containers (2) a smaller one in which you heat up the liquid (water) and a larger one in which you will heat up the oils and the thickeners
  • A pot or pan large or rather wide enough to put the glass containers in such as a pan
  • Hand-held mixer (if your Pyrex container is too small for both beaters, just use one; works just as well)
  • Popsicle sticks (not really a necessity but practical to stir the oil and the liquid)
  • Sterilized jars to fill your creams in. Use colored glass jars as they not only look pretty and make wonderful gifts but also keep the content from spoiling faster.
  • Measuring spoons (you can use any regular spoon just as well)
  • A good scale that weighs in at least as little as 2 gram (0.071 oz) increments, preferably using the metric system.
  • OILS & BUTTERS:
    • 30 ml Almond Oil, 3 ml Borage Seed Oil*, 3 ml Calendula Oil*, 5 ml Perilla Seed Oil*, 5 milliliters (0.17  fl oz) Rosehip Oil*, 5 ml Wheat Germ Oil*, 4 milliliters (0.14  fl oz) Vitamin E*, 6 g Shea Butter, 6 g Cocoa Butter* (*these oils or butters can be substituted for any other oil such as Apricot Oil, Olive Oil etc. Whatever oil you have will work just as well).
  • THICKENERS & EMULSIFIERS:
    • 2 g Beeswax & 6 g Borax, 15 g Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, 1 g Stearic Acid (not necessary), 1 g Xantham Gum (you can do without it as well)
  • LIQUIDS:
    • 130 ml distilled Water, 20 ml Lavender Hydrosol (you can use distilled water instead)
  • FRAGRANCE:
    • 8 drops German Chamomile Essential Oils, 7 drops Frankincense Essential Oils, 4 drops Geranium Essential Oils, 4 drops Jasmine Essential Oils, 10 drops Lavender Essential Oils but you can use any other essential oil as well.
