How to Hang Felt on the Wall

Felt crafts are super easy and fun to make with your kids. Hanging felt on the wall can be tough, since it doesn’t stay up with tape and nails can leave a hole in your wall. Fortunately, there are a couple ways you can hang up your felt in just a few minutes. By using some simple craft supplies, you can have a felt-decorated wall in no time!

Using Adhesive Strips for Small Pieces

Clean your wall with rubbing alcohol or soap. Pick out the area that you want to hang your felt piece and quickly wipe it down with water and dish soap or rubbing alcohol. Let your wall dry before you hang up your felt.^{[1]

- Adhesive strips work much better on clean walls.
- If you have wallpaper on your walls, don’t use adhesive strips. The stickiness could rip a hole in the paper.

Peel the backing off 2 adhesive strips. Most adhesive strips are sticky on both sides. Choose 1 side and peel off the adhesive liner so that 1 sticky side is exposed on each strip.^{[2]

Tip: Try not to touch any surfaces with the sticky part of your adhesive strips so they don’t pick up dirt or hair.

Attach 1 adhesive strip to both sides of the felt piece. Try to place your adhesive strips in the top corners of your felt piece so that it doesn’t sag. If your felt piece is large, you may need to add a few more adhesive strips in the bottom corners.^{[3]

Take the adhesive liner off the other side of the strips. Once your adhesive strips are situated, grab the adhesive liner on the back of each strip and pull it off. This will expose the sticky part of your adhesive strips, so try not to stick them to anything except your wall.^{[4]

Press the adhesive strips onto your wall. Hold your felt piece up to your wall and press down on either side to stick the adhesive to it. Press down on the strips for about 30 seconds to make sure your felt piece is really secure.^{[5]

- When you want to take your felt down, simply peel the adhesive strips off your wall and then take them off your felt piece.
- Adhesive strips are safe for drywall and paint, so they shouldn’t leave any marks on your walls.

Hanging Large Felt Pieces with Batting

Measure the height and width of your felt piece. Use a measuring tape to get precise measurements of your felt piece, then write those measurements down. If you want to cover an entire wall with felt, you can measure the height and width of your wall instead.^{[6]

Cut your batting to fit your felt measurements. Unroll a length of batting so it is flat on the ground, then mark your measurements onto it with a permanent marker. Use sharp scissors to cut out a piece of batting that matches the height and width of your felt piece.^{[7]

- You can find batting at most craft supply stores in the quilting section.
- Batting works well for large felt pieces, like a felt activity wall or a felt Christmas tree.

Spray your wall with adhesive spray and leave it for 2 minutes. Pick the area of your wall that you’d like to hang your felt and hold a can of adhesive spray about 3 inches (7.6 cm) away from it. Spray a thin layer of adhesive all over your wall, and wait for it to set for about 2 minutes.^{[8]

- The adhesive won’t dry, but it will become tacky in 2 minutes. Try not to leave it longer than 2 minutes, or it might actually dry all the way.

Put a thin layer of adhesive spray on the back of your batting. You can do this while you’re waiting for your adhesive spray to set on your wall. Make sure you spray a thin layer over the entire length of batting so that it’s slightly sticky.^{[9]

Press your batting onto the wall from the top down. Start from the top of the wall and align the batting so that it’s straight. Slowly press down on the batting from the top down so that the entire length is stuck to your wall.^{[10]

Tip: If any parts of the batting aren’t sticking, add some more adhesive spray to the wall.

Place your felt onto the batting to hang it up. Pick up your felt piece and align it with the batting. Press your felt onto the batting to hold it up. You can adjust it if you need to, since it isn’t glued to the batting. The felt will stick to the batting automatically without any added adhesive.^{[11]

- When you want to take down your felt, gently peel the batting off your wall. Then, use rubbing alcohol to clean off any adhesive residue left behind.
