Follow our extensive guide for getting horns

Goat horns are a super cool way to signal to other players where you are. They play 1 of 8 unique sounds depending on what horn you have. Goat horns are easy to get (if you don’t mind a little adventure). You can obtain them when goats ram a solid block, or find them in pillager outpost chests. This wikiHow guide will discuss how to get a goat horn in Minecraft, 2 ways.

Things You Should Know

  • There are 8 goat horn variations, 4 from regular goats, and 4 from screaming goats.
  • Goats will target something to ram every 30 to 300 seconds. If the target moves out of the way and the goat hits a solid block, they’ll drop a goat horn.
  • You can also find regular goat horns in pillager outposts. Look for a tall, brown lookout tower.
Section 1 of 4:

What are goat horns?

  1. 1
Goat horns play a sound that can be heard from far away. There are 8 variations of the horn, 4 that drop from regular goats, and 4 from screaming goats.[1]
    • Regular: Ponder, Sing, Seek, Feel
    • Screaming: Admire, Call, Yearn, Dream
  2. 2
Goat horns drop when a goat rams a hard block. You can get up to 2 of the same horn from an adult goat. Hard blocks include:
    • trees
    • coal ore
    • copper ore
    • emerald ore
    • iron ore
    • log
    • packed ice
    • stone

Where can you find goats?

  1. Goats spawn on snowy slopes, jagged peaks, and frozen peaks. They’ll spawn when the light is a level 7 or above.[2]
    • You can also catch a couple goats and start a goat farm! Use a lead to guide them into a fenced area. There you can breed them with wheat to get more goats (and more horns!).
    • Goats that spawn naturally only have a 2% chance of being a screaming goat. If you find one, you might want to breed it to avoid having to find more naturally spawning screaming goats.
    • If a normal goat is bred with a screaming variation, there’s a 50% chance that the baby will be a screaming goat.
    • If you breed 2 screaming goats, there’s a 100% chance of a screaming baby (in Java Edition). In Bedrock, there’s a 98% chance of a screaming goat baby.
    • Breeding 2 normal goats has a 2% chance of spawning a screaming goat baby.

Getting Goat Horns from Goats

  1. 1
Make sure the goat still has their horns. You’ll be able to see the intact horns on the goat’s head.
    • Also, normal and screaming goats look identical! You can identify the screaming variant if it makes screaming sounds and rams more often.
  2. 2
Locate the perfect ramming location. You need 2 things to arrange a successful goat horn drop:
    • The goat. They’ll target a single, unmoving target every 30 to 300 seconds. Then, they rush toward the target. Goats will target players, armor stands, and mobs (except ghasts and other goats).
    • The solid block. Find a solid block from the list above.
  3. 3
Wait for the goat to charge. Stand in front of the solid block with the goat nearby. When they’re about to charge, they’ll lower their head and rush toward the target.
    • Note that goats won’t target players when in Creative mode or Peaceful difficulty.
  4. 4
Move out of the way. Avoid the goat so they run into the solid block. Collect the dropped horn and enjoy the unique sound!

Getting Goat Horns from Outposts

  1. Look for a pillager outpost. The loot chest may contain a normal goat horn. They don’t have screaming goat horns.[3]
    • Identify pillager outposts by their tall, brown lookout tower and smaller house structures. Outposts are generated between hundreds or thousands of blocks.[4]
    • They may appear in biomes with or without villages — plains, desert, savanna, taiga, meadow, grove, snowy slopes, peaks.
    • Java Editions outposts won’t spawn in or near villages; Bedrock outposts can spawn in villages.
    • There will be pillagers that you’ll need to fight or avoid to get the loot chest contents at the top of the outpost tower. Look out for their crossbow shots!
