How to Write a Message on a Cake

Select a flat topped cake big enough to write your message on. A message can be written on a round, square or rectangle cake. Don't forget to choose a nice flavor. If the cake isn't nice to eat, your effort may not get as much appreciated.

Consider covering the cake before you write your message. You can cover your cake with any color of icing or frosting you like, just make sure your message is written in a contrasting color. Apply a smooth layer of icing sugar glaze, use fondant icing, add some marzipan or apply a neat, smooth layer of butter cream frosting.

Write your message with a piping bag. Fill a piping bag with a frosting or icing that is soft enough to flow from the piping bag. Use the line nozzle of your piping bag. If you haven't got a piping bag, you can try putting your frosting or icing in a sandwich bag and cutting a tiny piece from the corner of the bag you can squeeze out your message. • Practice writing your message on a plate before trying on the cake to see how easy the frosting is to work with. By piping onto a plate, you can scoop it off and place it back in the piping bag. Squeeze the bag gently and go slowly. Be extra careful at the end of each letter.

Melt chocolate and use that to write your message. You can write on a cake with melted chocolate using a piping bag, sandwich bag with the corner cut off or using a cone of baking parchment with the corner cut off. If you like onto aluminium foil, you can wait for the chocolate writting to harden, remove it from the foil then put it on the cake.

Use icing pens to write your message. Icing Pens can be purchased at larger supermarkets and cake decorating specialist shops or stores. These pens are designed for writing on cakes, cookies etc and easy to use. They come in a variety of colors; you may struggle to find any interesting flavors. You can practice with an icing pen before commuting your message to the cake, but the icing will go to waste as you can't put it back in the pen.

Arrange edible letters to spell out your message. Larger supermarkets sell candy, chocolate, jelly etc letters that you can use to write "Happy Birthday" or "Will U Marry Me?" or anything else you want to say. If you look online or at a specialist cake decorating supplier you may find other types of edible letters that meet your needs. Stick the letters down with frosting, chocolate or jam/melted jelly.

Form your message from small candies or edible cake decorations. If you're not writing an essay, you can form a name or a couple of words by arranging small edibles items in order.
