Even if you’ve been seeing someone for a while, asking them to be official can still feel a little nerve wracking. Planning a romantic gesture is a great way to sweep her off her feet when you pop the question! Read through this list of romantic ways to ask a girl to be your girlfriend, then use your favorite one to solidify your relationship.
Steps
Make her a playlist.
-
Curate a list of romantic songs that she’ll appreciate. Head over to Spotify or Apple Music (or even YouTube!) and make a playlist with your favorite songs, her favorite songs, and a blend of the two. When you two are together next, set up the playlist on your phone and listen to it together. At the end of the playlist, you can ask her to be your girlfriend.[1] X Research source
- This is also a great one to use if you don’t live near her and you can’t see her for a little bit. Make her a playlist and then text it to her, then call her up after she listens to it and pop the question.
- You can phrase your question by saying something like, “I want to make this official. Will you be my girlfriend?”
Take her out to a nice restaurant.
-
This classic romantic gesture can’t go wrong. Make reservations at a 5-star restaurant nearby, then offer to pick her up. You can both dress a little fancier than you usually do, and you can splurge on that bottle of wine (if you’re old enough) or a dessert she’s been eyeing. At the end of the meal, take her hand and look into her eyes as you ask her to be your girlfriend.[2] X Research source
- This is a great option if your potential girlfriend is a foodie or has a taste for the finer things in life.
Say it with a scavenger hunt.
-
Set up clues and send her around the city looking for them. If you two have been dating for a little while now, you probably have at least a couple of spots where you’ve spent a lot of time. Sit down and write up a handful of clues, then end the last one somewhere romantic. At the end, you can have flowers and chocolates waiting as you pop the question.[3] X Research source
- For example, your first clue might say, “This place is very special, and you looked super great; it’s where we had our very first date.”
Win her over with a baked good.
-
Either whip something up yourself or head to a local bakery. Buy her a delicious pastry or a muffin, as long as she isn’t gluten-free! Then, head over to her place, baked good in hand, to ask her to be your girlfriend.[4] X Research source
- To amp it up even more, buy her a coffee or a tea to present alongside the delicious baked good.
Say it in a love letter.
-
If you aren’t great at saying how you feel, try this. Grab your nicest stationary and a ballpoint pen, then sit down and draft a letter. Tell her how much you enjoy her company, how much she means to you, and then ask her to be your girlfriend. Seal the letter in an envelope, then give it to her the next time you see her.[5] X Research source
- At the end of the letter, write something like, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
- Try to stick around as she reads the letter so you can get the answer to your question.
- Or, if you two don’t live close, you could send her the letter via snail mail and then call her up when she opens it.
Make a romantic dinner.
-
Show off your chef skills by cooking her a meal at home. Think back to what her favorite food is—pasta? Tacos? Curry? Then, spend a few hours crafting it to perfection. When she comes over, light a few candles to set the mood and put on some soft music. When you’re both finished eating, ask her to be your girlfriend while digesting your romantic meal.[6] X Research source
- If she has a sweet tooth, don’t forget about dessert!
Buy her a gift.
-
Go out and grab something small to show her that you care. Don’t feel like you have to break the bank, especially if you two haven’t been seeing each other for long. Grab something like a bouquet of flowers, a simple pair of earrings, or her favorite snack.[7] X Expert Source John Keegan

Then, present your gift to her when you pop the question to show her how much you like her.[8] X Research source- If you have absolutely no idea what to get her, consider her interests. If she likes reading, grab her a bookmark or a paperback that she’s been wanting. If she loves animals, buy her a magnet with a cat or a dog on it.
Take her out in nature.
-
If she loves the outdoors, this is a great option for you. Throw out the idea of going on a hike or a nature walk somewhere nearby. When you’re out strolling through the great outdoors, wait until you get to a beautiful view, then ask her to be your girlfriend. Chances are, this is a moment she’ll never forget![9] X Research source
- Want to make this even more romantic? Go out during sunset or sunrise for a beautiful backdrop when you ask your question.
Set up a picnic.
-
Pack a basket full of crackers, cheese, and fruit. Grab your favorite picnic blanket and head out to a local park (or even just to your backyard).[10] X Expert Source John Keegan

Arrange everything on the blanket so you two can snack as you chat, then pop the question while pouring her a glass of juice or champagne.[11] X Research source- If it’s rainy out or you don’t live near any nature areas, set up your picnic on the floor inside!
Make her breakfast in bed.
-
Present her with a tray of delicious breakfast items. If she spent the night at your place, get up early to make a beautiful array of waffles, eggs, bacon, and toast. Put them all on a tray and then bring the food to her in bed so she can snack while staying comfortable. When you’ve both finished eating, tell her how much you like her and then ask her to be your girlfriend.[12] X Research source
- Amp up your breakfast in bed by adding a vase with fresh flowers or a freshly made baked good.
Go away for the weekend.
-
Rent a cabin or book a hotel somewhere a few hours away. Pack up the car, bring a suitcase, and leave all your worries behind. During your trip, pick a special moment (like when you’re having a romantic dinner) to tell her how much you like spending time with her, then ask her to be your girlfriend.[13] X Research source
- Look for cheaper places on Airbnb to rent without breaking the bank.
