How to Name a Stuffed Animal or Toy

Whenever you get a new stuffed animal or toy, like a stuffed toy cat or a dog, it's not long before you realize it needs a new name. The name is something you'll always remember, as it makes the toy special and gives it character for you. If you're stuck for ideas on naming your new stuffed animal or toy, try not to focus so much on it being perfect; rather, as you look at your toy and spend time with it, something should come to you.

Try not to name the toy anything that is too hard to pronounce or too long. You might find yourself forgetting it! Instead, try to have your stuffed animals name be from three to seven letters.
- If you do choose a long name, think about the nickname you can create from the longer name. Is it a nickname you like?

Look at your toy carefully. First, before anything, always decide whether you want a real person's name, or a name such as "Fluffy"? Look at the features of the toy. If the toy has a bobblehead, for example, maybe you could name it Bobby, or Shaky. Or, think about the gender. You probably don't want a boy named Princess! Think about what animal the toy is and name it for what it is matched with. For example, a parrot. They are known to live with pirates, so why not a "pirate"-ish name, such as "Patchy"?

If your toy's fur is, let's say, rather long or messy, you could name it Shaggy or Puffball. Or maybe if a toy is "jet black", you could name your toy Jet.
- Look carefully at the toy's face or expression, and sometimes a name just pops inside your head! See if it reminds you of someone you know, but don't give them your best friend's name if it's a stuffed pig.

If your toy is related to a holiday or season, this might suggest a name. For example, Webkinz makes Love Puppies. If you have a seasonal stuffed animal, think about something related to that holiday. Like "Spooks" for a Halloween toy, or "Hearts" for a Valentine toy.

Think about how you met/got the toy. Then the name will have a meaning.

Consider naming the toy after a famous person you like. Or, if your stuffed animal reminds you of someone you know, you could name them after that person. This could even be a place you love going to, or a landmark or monument that is special for you.
- Try naming it after a character in a movie.

Think about a name you might have heard on TV. If you really like the name, why not name your toy that. If you play an instrument, maybe you could think of a song name you like and name your toy the name of the song.

Do an online search "Names for ___ (Whatever gender you want your toy to be)". A lot of websites have names for babies and children, so you can pick one name which suits the toy you want to be named.
