Origami enthusiasts often use special origami paper to help them make their creations. However, if you're just dabbling a little or experimenting with this craft, you might want a way to try it with just simple printer paper. Start with step 1 to make a box using a regular sheet of paper.

Steps

  1. 1
Fold the paper from the top to the bottom, and line the edges up nicely. Then make a crease.
  2. 2
Fold the paper left to right, and make another crease.

  3. 3
Bring only the corner of the very top piece of paper to the left so that you have a triangle on the top. Make creases on the top edges of that triangle.
  4. 4
Bring the right of the triangle flap to the left. Make the same triangle shape again with the top layer of the paper on the right.
  5. 5
Bring the top left layer of that triangle to the right, and you should be left with an irregular pentagon shape.
  6. 6
Take the top flap on the left and the top flap on the right, and fold them to the middle so that their edges meet. Then make a crease.
  7. 7
Flip the whole thing over and repeat step 6.
  8. 8
Fold the two inner corners up to form a little triangle. Flip it over and repeat.
  9. 9
Fold the whole top flap up like this. Flip it over and repeat.
  10. 10
Take the little triangles that we made and tuck them in the little pockets. Now flip it over and do the same thing.
  11. 11
Open it. To do that, you have to pick it up from the bottom and open the box. You have to use your fingers to get the edges pushed back.
  12. 12
    Enjoy the completed box!

There are loose corners on the inside of the figure from where you folded the outer edges in. The bottom of those edges that are in the middle are folded into triangles.

On each side of the triangle, you should have two layers, a top layer and a bottom layer. This step means that you fold the left top layer to the center crease and the right top layer to the center crease.

No, you don't need square paper. You can use regular rectangular printer paper when folding this box.
