Want to find out who owns a landline or mobile phone number? Doing a reverse phone number lookup is an easy way to get personal information, including the name, carrier, and sometimes the address, of the phone number's owner. This information is much easier to find when you're searching for a landline, but mobile phone numbers are also becoming easier to trace. This wikiHow article will show you completely free ways to search for info about any phone number.

Steps

  1. 1
Look up any US-based number at ThatsThem. ThatsThem can tell you a surprising amount of information about any US-based phone number, including mobile phone numbers. Depending on the phone number, you can find the phone number's current owner, as well as the owner's current and previous addresses. You can look up 30 numbers per day for free.
    • Go to https://thatsthem.com in a web browser.
    • Click Phone at the top of the page to go to the Reverse Phone Lookup page.
    • Enter a mobile or landline phone number, starting with the area code.
    • Click Search to find all available information.
  2. 2
Find the owner of any number in the world at ZLOOKUP. If you want to find the name of the person who owns a phone number anywhere in the world, you can probably find it on Zlookup. Unlike most other reverse-lookup sites, Zlookup can even identify a lot of VoIP phone numbers, including Google Voice.[1] This is a completely free reverse lookup site that just reports the owner's name—no addresses here.
    • Go to https://www.zlookup.com.
    • Select the phone number's country code (e.g., 1 for the US).
    • Enter the phone number.
    • Check the box next to "I'm not a robot" to search.
    • If the number is available, you'll see the owner's name and the name of the carrier. If not, you'll just see the carrier's name.

  3. 3
Search for local and international landlines on NumberVille. Numberville is another international reverse-lookup database that can help you find lots of information about phone numbers around the world. You can find the owner's name, city, phone provider, and possibly even their current address here if the phone number is not private. Numberville provides more identifying information than Zlookup but isn't as good with mobile numbers.
    • Go to https://numberville.com in a web browser.
    • Select the country from the drop-down menu.
    • Enter the phone number after the country code (the code appears automatically).
    • Click SEARCH.
  4. 4
Try a simple Google search. Sometimes Google is the best way to find information about a phone number! Simply type the phone number into Google and see what comes up.
    • Sometimes Google will bring up some paid lookup options. Try the free options we've suggested before paying for a lookup service—most of the time it won't be necessary to pay!
  5. 5
Pay for a service if the free options fail you. If you're having trouble finding information about a mobile phone number, a paid option may be your only chance at finding information about the number. When choosing a paid option, stick to a reputable site like White Pages, Intelius, or Spokeo. Most of these options have one-time fees per phone number, and/or monthly subscriptions that gives you additional lookups.
    • Some of these paid services may not be able to track down much more information on a phone number than what you can find on free sites.

To get search phone numbers for free, you need to use a combination of sites and services to avoid fees. You could try the National Cellular Directory to begin with. Or, you can try one or any combination of the four ways suggested in the steps above to see if any of them work for you. Sometimes it is best to use a few services to be sure you get the result you’re after, as their reliability and "free" search abilities can change over time.

Google doesn’t provide a specific service for searching phone numbers. However, if the phone number has been provided publicly, such as for a business, hotline, charity, government department, etc., then a standard Google search should return the number as part of the website information (sometimes displayed in a side box as part of the search return). Just be aware that your search may be complicated by overseas numbers and use of the same set of numbers in ways that have nothing to do with phone numbers.

A phone number is assigned to you on the SIM card you purchase for a cell phone/smartphone––for help with finding it, see How to Get Your Mobile Number from Your SIM, which will help you find it on a variety of phones or via the telecommunications carrier. And the telecommunications authorities who install a landline will assign you a landline number; contact your carrier by email or cell phone if you don’t know what number they’ve assigned your landline phone.
