How to Cover a Mole

Your mole makes you unique and beautiful, and it’s important to feel confident and love the skin you’re in. That said, it’s perfectly fine to hide a mole on your face or anywhere on your body if you feel like it. For example, you may want to cover your mole every day or just occasionally. The good news is that with a few readily available beauty products, you can cover a mole quickly and easily in your mirror, without any expert intervention.

Covering Moles with Regular Makeup

    Buy full-coverage cream concealer, foundation, and loose powder. Full-coverage beauty products are formulated with extra pigment and other ingredients to cover dark spots on the skin. It’s also important to buy concealer, foundation and powder that closely match your complexion or a shade darker.[1] Lighter shades of makeup can make your mole look more pronounced.[2]
    • To get the perfect shade for your complexion, you may need to buy one or two shades of concealer and foundation and blend them on your skin.
    • It’s a little difficult to cover a mole if it’s protruding out. This is a great way to cover a mole that sits at skin level, though![3]

    Wash the area where your mole appears. Then, apply moisturizer or toner. You want to apply moisturizer if you have dry skin and toner if you have oily skin. Allow your skin to dry off just a bit, which makes the concealer stay put when applied.
    • It's a good idea to wash your skin with a facial cleanser, or a mild cleansing bar, to get rid of oil and other impurities.[4]

    Dab cream concealer over and around your mole. Start by dipping your fingers into the cream concealer and lightly tapping the concealer on and around your mole. The technique should remind you of finger painting. Then, let the concealer dry for a minute or so. You might need a second application of concealer if your mole still shows after one application, so repeat if necessary.
    • If you’re using two shades of concealer, dab both of them over your mole and blend.
    • You also have the option to apply and blend the concealer with a foundation brush or a beauty blender.[5]

    Apply a bit of foundation on top of the concealer and blend. Use the same finger painting technique to dab foundation over the concealer. Your mole should be almost invisible at this point. Work the foundation outwards with a beauty blender or sponge so that it blends flawlessly over the concealer and with the rest of your skin.[6]

    Dust face powder over the spot as a final coat. Face powder isn't just for the face. It works like fixative, so the concealer and foundation won't run. Dip the face powder applicator, a powder brush for example, in the powder and tap it on the edge of the container to remove any excess. Apply the powder lightly and evenly over the spot.
    • Your mole should be completely covered at this point.
    • Remember, you can use beauty products like creme concealer, foundation and face powder on any part of your body your mole appears.

Covering Moles with Tattoo Concealers

    Buy a tattoo eraser and tattoo concealer. Tattoo erasers are made to cover black and blue tattoo ink so they work well to cover moles. These products also are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about your mole reappearing should you sweat or get rained on.[8]
    • Just as with any other kind of makeup, for results that you’ll be happy with, choose a tattoo eraser and concealer that closely match your complexion.

    Erase your mole with the tattoo eraser. Like erasing pencil lines on a piece of paper, gently work the tattoo eraser tip over and around your mole. Let the eraser mark dry and dab a second layer of the product over your mole to conceal it only if it's still visible.[9]
    • A tattoo eraser works great to cover moles on your face or anywhere else on your body.

    Apply the tattoo concealer on top of the eraser marks. Tattoo concealer usually comes in a tube or a screw-top container. You want to work the concealer gently over the spot. As with the tattoo eraser, let the tattoo concealer dry and apply a second coat if you can still see your mole.
    • You can use a foundation brush or beauty blender to apply tattoo concealer, but feel free to use your fingers, too.

    Blend the tattoo concealer. Use your fingers or a foundation brush to smooth the tattoo concealer, working outward so the product blends with your skin. You should check the spot in the mirror as you finish up to make sure your mole is concealed to your satisfaction. You can then apply loose powder to fix the tattoo makeup in place.
    • Both the tattoo eraser and concealer work well to cover moles on the fly. You might consider carrying a set in your handbag or backpack to cover a mole quickly when you're out and about.

Covering Moles with Fashion and Accessories

    Wear a scarf or gloves for moles on your neck or hands. You may have a mole on your neck or hands you wish to cover for certain occasions. Gloves work well for formal and informal evening events, costume parties, and nights out on the town. Depending on the season, drape a lightweight or heavyweight scarf loosely around your neck for a casual, formal, or professional look.
    • Covering your moles can also protect them from being exposed to UV radiation, which can cause them to mutate into melanoma.
    • For example, you might consider wearing a cashmere scarf to hide a mole during the winter and a lightweight cotton or silk scarf in the summer.

    It's important not to put on too much makeup, as this will make the mole look cakey or textured. It is not possible to completely cover up raised moles; I recommend very lightweight makeup or ask a doctor to remove it if it's really bothering you.

Tip

  • You can use foundation only to cover moles. First, prep your skin with toner. Then, layer on two to three applications of foundation. Apply loose powder to keep the foundation from running.[11]
  • Consider wearing funky socks or tights with fun designs to cover moles that appear on your legs or feet.

Warning

  • When moles/nevi are evolving into melanoma, they often change color, grow rapidly, become symptomatic or tender/itchy. Moles/nevi that are changing should be evaluated as soon as possibly to ensure early detection and treatment of a possible melanoma.
  • Avoid using skin lightening cream to hide your mole. It can damage your skin but doesn't remove the skin pigment that causes moles.[12]
