  • Group Differences in Intelligence

    • The variance of intelligence scores among individual human beings can be extrapolated to larger population differences in general intelligence and mental capacity.
    • From the beginning of intellectual research, psychologists have attempted to rank individuals and populations on their respective intelligence scores.
    • Third, while the data clearly shows differences in test scores, it remains possible that the test takers were the victims of inherent bias and thus no difference actually exists.

  • Two sample t test

    • To evaluate the hypotheses in Exercise 5.28 using the t distribution, we must first verify assumptions. ( a) Does it seem reasonable that the scores are independent within each group?

  • IQ Tests

    • After decades of revision, modern IQ tests produce a mathematical score based on standard deviation, or difference from the average score.
    • In a normal distribution, 50% of the scores will be below the average (or mean) score and 50% of the scores will be above it.
    • So by current measurement standards, 68% of people score between 85 and 115, 95% of the population score between 70 and 130 points, and over 99% of the population score between 55 and 145.
    • While all of these tests measure intelligence, not all of them label their standard scores as IQ scores.
    • IQ test scores tend to form a bell curve, with approximately 95% of the population scoring between two standard deviations of the mean score of 100.
