In 2007, a total of 2,999 contracting companies reported employment at coal mines to MSHA, or 35.7% of all independent contracting companies. This 2007 mining fact sheet covers statistics of general interest relating to contract workers at surface and underground coal mining operations, workers, fatalities, nonfatal lost-time injuries, and occupational illness.
