All About Creepypastas
Ever since the mid-to-late 2000s, creepypastas have become a mainstay in modern internet culture. As a mash-up of the words creepy and copypasta (a block of text designed to be copied and pasted over and over again), creepypastas are just that—creepy, chilling tales that are designed to be spread and shared all over the web.
Types of Creepypastas
Creepypastas come in all shapes, sizes, and forms—but a lot of internet authors gravitate toward similar types of stories. Here are a few common creepypasta categories you might stumble across:
- Narrative: Many creepypastas are written as traditional short stories, detailing a fictional account of something horrifying or chilling. These stories are sometimes written in first person (I/me pronouns), but can also be written in second (you/your) or third (he/she/they) person.
- Lost Episode: Some well-known creepypastas detail a “lost” or unaired episode of a popular TV show or franchise (like Mickey Mouse, The Simpsons, and Spongebob Squarepants). In this “episode,” something gruesome or otherwise disturbing happens to a popular TV show or cartoon character.
- Urban Legend: Urban legend creepypastas involve modern folklore stories that often have supernatural elements.
- Video Game: These creepypastas detail scary instances that revolve around popular video game franchises (like Pokemon, Sonic the Hedgehog, Legend of Zelda, and Minecraft).
Famous Creepypastas
All creepypastas revolve around some type of spooky character or circumstance (and usually involve a pretty gruesome, bloody, or otherwise disturbing ending). Here are just a few offenders that really took the internet by storm over the years:
- Slender Man: Slender Man is a faceless, humanoid creature dressed up in a suit. His arms are long and almost like tentacles, and he’s well-known for hunting people.
- Smile Dog: Smile Dog refers to a picture of a creepy-looking husky. After someone looks at the picture, the dog appears in the person’s dream and tells them to “Spread the word.”
- Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv: Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv is the name of a YouTube video featuring unsettling images of a man in front of a backdrop. According to the legend, some people go crazy once they’ve viewed it.
- Herobrine: Herobrine is a creepy ghost that supposedly exists in Minecraft.
- Abandoned by Disney: This story details a person who investigates a deserted Disney resort and finds a grotesque version of Mickey Mouse.
- The Backrooms: This story explores an empty dimension or realm that’s filled with nothing but endless hallways, carpets, and fluorescent lights. While in “the backrooms,” individuals may run into evil creatures.
- The Russian Sleep Experiment: This urban legend details a fake experiment allegedly done by the Soviets throughout WWII. During this experiment, prisoners were exposed to a special gas that forced them to stay awake, which ultimately transformed them all into zombie-esque creatures.
