How to Open L.O.L. Surprise Toys

L.O.L. Surprise toys can be difficult and challenging to open. The many layers to navigate and the difficult packaging can make it a hassle to open. This wikiHow will show you how to open an L.O.L. Surprise toy.

Opening Classic L.O.L. Series Toys

    Unwrap the packaging. L.O.L. tots, pets, and lils come in the iconic plastic packaging that you have to unwrap. In previous years, there were many layers that you had to unwrap to finally get the capsule. In recent years, MGA Entertainment has reduced the amount of plastic packaging, from as many as 5-7 layers to only 2-3 layers to save waste. They have also partnered with TerraCycle to help recycle the rest of the plastic packaging.
    • There will be a perforated zipper on the ball. Locate it, and it should easily tear off.
    • Do this for all the layers of the ball until you see the capsule.
    • There will be a secret message for you to decode for fun in the plastic packaging. The answer will be upside down on the bottom of the secret message. You can peel the message off and stick it somewhere if you want to.

    Locate the doll or pet's accessories. The ball is not a perfectly spherical ball; it has holes to store the doll/pet's clothing and accessories.
    • On the bottom of the ball, there is a "secret compartment". Lift the plate up, and there will be another bag of accessories for the doll. [1]

    Open the accessories one by one. In each bag, there will be the doll's accessories. Older balls (from 2016-2018) will have plastic bags. Balls from 2019 and later will have paper packaging to conserve.
    • If you're opening an L.O.L. pet, there will be a sandbox for it to tinkle. Some of the pet's accessories will be hidden inside of the sandbox. Unwrap the plastic on the sandbox, and dig using the small shovel you get to see the accessories.
    • Check to see if you have the clothing, shoes, and accessories (like headbands, headphones, hairbands, bracelets, bags, etc.) in each of the bags. If you do, you're all set! If you are missing a few pieces, you can contact MGA Entertainment for retrieving them.

    Open the ball. The ball contains the checklist, instructions, and your doll.
    • The ball can be difficult to open. Put your fingers into the holes of the ball and try to pry it open from two sides to make it easier.
    • There will be a large package, which is the doll. Tear that package open to see the doll. (which is either naked, or has color-changing clothing painted on)
    • The ball can actually be used as a seat for the doll. There is a rounded area in which the doll can sit on. The other half of the toy contains a bathtub (there are imprinted bubbles on the ball) which is also useful for taking care of your doll.

    Look at the checklist. There are 3 series of exclusively female L.O.L. dolls (and the first few series of LOL toys). There are 4 series of exclusively male L.O.L. dolls (made in the years 2019, 2020, and 2021). There are 3 series of L.O.L. original pets.
    • You can see which doll/pet you got by looking at the pictures of the dolls and whether or not it spits, cries, tinkles, or color-changes.

    Locate the accessories. The ball is smaller for L.O.L. lils, and there are no compartments for accessories. All of the surprises are in the ball.
    • There is a keychain for you to attach on the ball. You can hang the ball onto your backpack or purse for decoration.
    • It can be very hard to put the keychain in, so it is optional. Try to push the keychain in as hard as you can.

    Open the accessories and shoes. The accessories and shoes won't fit the lil.
    • They all go to its older sister or brother. If you have the lil's older sibling, you can dress the sibling in its extra accessories and shoes.

    Open up the lil. The lil will be in a package too. Rip open the package to get the lil.
    • The lil will be a baby sibling or a little pet.
    • Little pets don't have joints for their legs to move.

Opening HairGoals Series Toys

    Rip the packaging. The packaging is a toy hairspray container encased in plastic. Rip the plastic paper up.
    • Use the perforated zipper located on the packaging to help you open the container easier.
    • There will be a secret message for you to decode for fun in the plastic packaging. The answer will be upside down on the bottom of the secret message. You can peel the message off and stick it somewhere if you want to.
    • There will also be some hair-clip stickers for you to put in your doll's hair.

    Open up the top of the container. The top of the container has the lid to the pretend hairspray container.
    • There will be one surprise (either the doll's accessories, clothing, bottle, or shoes) hidden.

    Open up the two doors to the container. The container includes your doll (encased in a coffin-like container), hair curlers which contain accessories and a doll comb, the instructions manual, and the checklist. [2]
    • Open up the hair curlers and rip open the packaging to get a small doll hair comb in the shape of a bow and accessories for your doll.
    • Open up the doll's container to get your doll. It will be wrapped in a rubber suit. Take off the rubber pieces individually or keep it as one piece (like a jumpsuit).

    Open up the different hairstyles of the doll. Open up the plastic packaging by prying the two sides apart.
    • Each doll comes with 3-4 hairstyles that you can attach to the doll's head. There are two plastic hairstyles and two hairstyles with real hair.

    Open up the doll's accessories. These will be in the L.O.L. Surprise ball, which is a larger ball than usual.
    • Rip or cut open the packaging to get the doll's clothing, bottle, comb, shoes, and accessories.

    Open up the doll. The doll is always in the largest paper/plastic bag.
    • Rip or cut open the packaging to get the doll out. You can actually take the doll's hair out and attach the new hairstyles he/she has using velcro.
    • Take out the old hairpieces by gently pulling on them and add new ones to the velcro head. Stick the new hair attachments on. [3]
    • There will usually be two halves of a hairstyle, like one ponytail on each hairpiece. Attach different halves for a combined hairstyle, like half wavy hair and half ponytail.

Opening Arcade Heroes Series Toys

    Open up the paper packaging. The doll is encased in a retro-style arcade machine, which is contained inside some paper. Rip the paper up.
    • You should see a token that allows you to open the arcade. The token is also similar to a retro-style arcade machine. Both require tokens.

    Insert the token into the slot. The slot should be on the right side of your arcade. Insert it in, and the token should pop out.
    • The token pops out because of the spring mechanism inside of the toy; it won't trap your coin inside because you won't be able to open the arcade up without the coin.

    Take out the arcade window, and tear apart the gradient paper that says, "Choose Your Hero". The paper (decorated like an arcade game) covers the surprises which are hidden in the compartments of the arcade.
    • The clothing, shoes, and accessories of the doll are located on the top of the arcade.
    • The official instructions state that you can use your coin to tear it apart to make it easier. [4]
    • Take all of the doll's clothing, shoes, and accessories out. There are cool accessories, like a skateboard, a fanny pack, and a juice box for a bottle.

    See your doll. Your doll is encased in a Transformers-type suit. That's the whole theme of this series-gaming and arcade heroes.
    • Pry apart the suit. The suit isn't difficult to open, and the locking mechanism is weak. [5]
    • The arms and legs of the suit should come apart with little effort.
    • You should see your doll with underwear on. The underwear slips off, and the underwear is there for the suit to stay on properly. Many parents like the underwear, for the doll's genitals aren't seen by young children.

    Locate the ribbon. The packaging is basically a paper present, wrapped in ribbon. Unwrap the present like you would unwrap a birthday or Christmas present. Pull on the ribbon, and it should unwrap.
    • You can also cut the ribbon if you need to.
    • There will be a secret message for you to decode for fun in the packaging. The answer will be upside down on the bottom of the secret message. You can peel the message off and stick it somewhere if you want to.

    Unwrap the accessories. The accessories will be in the present. Rip open the packaging or cut the packaging to access the doll's clothing, bottle, and accessories.

    Slide the cardboard panel. There will be an arrow that tells you where to slide. The arrow will say START HERE. O.M.G. dolls are encased in a cardboard box, not a small plastic capsule like L.O.L. tots, pets, and lils. [6]

    • The doll, unlike L.O.L. tots, have undergarments on (as they are teenagers and have more pronounced features). Their undergarments are made out of fabric.
    • Their hair is not hard plastic like L.O.L. tots' hair.

    Open up the doll's accessories. The accessories are packaged more intricately than L.O.L. tots' and pets' accessories. O.M.G. dolls have clothing, shoes, and accessories (no bottles) stored in realistic shopping containers (like bags and shoe boxes).
    • The clothing will be packaged in realistic clothing bags with neat patterns on them. Carefully take the clothing out if you don't want to rip the bags. They will also be made out of nice fabric with many small details, like little zippers and buttons on jackets.
    • The shoes will be high heels, but each doll's shoes have different colors and designs on them.
    • The dolls will have accessories like earrings, skateboards, hats, purses, backpacks, glasses, bracelets, and necklaces.

    • LOL Boys Arcade Heroes Series 1 and Series 2 (includes an LOL boy in a Transformer-like suit - also include a toy arcade and a coin to unlock and get the boy) - released in 2021 and 2022

    Buy LOL OMG dolls. They are the teen sisters of LOL tot dolls. LOL OMG dolls are a lot taller than LOL tot dolls. They are a few inches shorter than Barbies. LOL OMG dolls are around 23 cm tall (9 inches). OMG Guys have also been introduced. There are no genitalia on OMG Guys (as that would've caused a HUGE controversy) They are made in the following series:
    • Classic series - Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, and Series 5 - released in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022)
    • Winter Disco Series (includes winter themed fashion dolls) - released in 2020
    • Lights Series (includes a black light which reveals hidden patterns on the doll) - released in 2021

    Buy the new LOL tween dolls. They are "in between" OMG and LOL dolls. Tot dolls are around 3-7 years old, OMG dolls are around 15-17 years old, and the new "Tweens" series is around 8-13 years old. They are around 15 cm (6 in) tall.
